A Night To Remember

A report from Social Director Judi Coffey:

Well they said “build it and they will come” - and they did, all 150 of them!.  The evening was themed to suit Peter O’Day’s (POD’s) 30 Years as Groundskeeper at Cottesloe Tennis Club - and they dressed accordingly !

Some of the stars spotted on the night included John McEnroe (Peter Dyson), ABBA (David and Georgia Culley), Mr Sparkle (Laurence Pace) and many many more who went to a huge effort for the night including the surprise appearance of guest band “ABBAsolutely not ABBA”.

A thank you to all the people who supplied pictures from 1979 for the presentation, and a big NO NO to the person with the sleight of hand who removed Rambo George (pennants organiser) and darling Dave’s (our tennis coach) photos, we worry about you.

The food was superb with thanks to Zanders catering, Scarborough Beach www.zanders.com.au, please go and have a meal there sometime.

To all the helpers and guests Cottesloe Tennis Club thanks you for your social input as well as your tennis.  We are a great fun Club because of all of you and what you put in.

EDITORS NOTE:  POD was heard to state after the event “that night was better than my wedding night” - when his wife Ivana heard this she replied …  ”I agree! ”

Alicia Molik with some Cott Juniors

Alicia at North Cott

Alicia at North Cott

New Cott member, Alicia Molik recently visited North Cott Primary School together with Club Coach David Culley to say hello to some of CTC’s junior members and pennant players, and encourage others to consider taking a more active role in Tennis.

Pictured with Alicia are (from left to right) Cottesloe Juniors:

Lachie Yeo, Rigby Dowland, George Van Been, and Hugo Campbell

As noted, Alicia is a recent addition to our wonderful Cottesloe Tennis Club membership, so if you see her around the Club do say “hi” but please also give her some space to enjoy her time at the Club :)

Mid-week / Night Pennants report

From Pennants Co-ordinator Rose Moore

Midweek/Night Pennants

The Midweek Pennant season this summer was a mix bag of a heat out and a wash out (most surprising for Summer).  A smooth running season with no major problems finding players.  Many thanks to Ruth Luyer, Julie Holt, Sheena Storm and myself for doing an excellent job as Captains.

Grass 55 Div 1 Team – as usual where an incredible force to be reckoned with.  They maintained  1st position for most of the season but a rain off day meant a draw on a match they needed.  A great season with finishing 3rd but missing out in the semis.  The team – Ruth Luyer as Captain,  Thelma Furlong, Dianne Hewitt, Jeanette Muir, Tricia Den Hann and Judy Curran. See them next summer season as a trophy is imminent.

Midweek Pennant Division 3 Team –A very good season with some really great wins.  Beating the undefeated top team was a bonus. Ending up 4th on the ladder for the semis meant an early morning and a long drive to Lesmurdie where we lost convincingly.  There’s always next season! This was really a mix of 2 teams of old with Rose Moore as Captain, Lisa McCusker, Kirsten Prendiville, Claire Medhurst (back from knee reconstruction), Donna Holmes and our Dutch dynamite Anna Cullen.

Midweek Pennant Division 4 Team – began a little daunted but proved to be in the race with some wins and very close games.  Most players in the team also increased their rankings – a job well done. The team continues unchanged to fight on throughout the winter season with Julie Holt as Captain, Jo Dawkins, Sue Dibb(welcome back to pennants), Andrea Descant, Pen Oldfield, Mara Limberopoulis and Lorraine Bossie.

Women’s Night Div 2 Team- psychologically, losing their No.1 player to ‘tennis elbow’ (Michelle Atkins), every week was like starting behind the eight ball. Fantastic tennis, lovely opposition and delicious suppers but there’s no doubt a different division, a different outcome.  The Team - Sheena Storm as Captain (twin 1), Fiona Allan (twin 1), Lucinda Anderson (welcome back to pennants after tennis elbow recovery), Lisa McCusker and Rose Moore. This winter we are starting strong and ready to have a real go.

 ‘Not just a Coach’

Anna Cullen is such a dedicated player she was unable to take her son to his first day of Pre-primary as it clashed with her pennant match at Cottesloe, so David Culley took Brian Cullen (ages 5) to his first day of Pre-primary so his Mum could finish a very important game of the season.  Thanks David for saving the day and Brian for being so understanding!!! P.S. Brian’s Teacher was confused when the real Mr Cullen turned up later in the week.

‘2nd Tin of Balls required’

A certain team (who shall remain anonymous) were faced with the dilemma of their opposition turning up late. They decided they must take 2 sets as penalty (especially as this had potential to affect the ladder).  The Opposition, when told of their penalty and lack of communication or apology, became very aggressive and told the Cottesloe team exactly their thoughts, at which the Cottesloe team cowered away and gave into them, just like that!!  Where’s that 2nd tin of ball when you need it?

FAQ – rules of pennants

A foot under the net whilst hitting any shot is considered “out”.

‘Commencement of play’ – 9.30am Midweek, 7.30pm Night.  Score cards are to be written out 10 minutes before commencement of play, balls warmed up before commencement of play and all players on the court (not premises)at commencement of play.

Interested in Playing Pennants?

Need more information?  Get a team together or register your interest with Rose Moore (rose[AT]timmoore.com.au) (Co-ordinator).  An interest unfortunately does not guarantee a position in a team.

New Playground coming soon

After considerable discussion at the Management Committee and some excellent work from Graham Dowland and others in a specially formed Playground sub-committee, an order has been placed for a new playground to be installed at the old playground site.

An image of the playground is attached - after the initial installation of equipment there will follow an installation of safe-fall matting.

Thanks go out to all who helped with the discussions, planning, stump and old-playground removal to prepare for this major improvement at our Club.

Men’s State Grade Blockbuster thankyou!

A report from our roving reporter Claire:j0231976-0000

Cottesloe Tennis Club would like to acknowledge and thank the volunteers and sponsors who all helped make the Blockbuster day on 7th March such a huge success.

Kids were encouraged to come along and participate in the day with the lure icecreams, drinks, a chance to win an iPod and docking station and of course the chance to watch some wonderful tennis.  The lucky iPod winner was a very excited Harry Bird who was tracked thereafter by a flock of friends eager to look at his new goodies.

Jack Harrison, Derek Walker and Gaham Povey were a fetching trio in their pretty aprons while cooking steaks for the evening meal.

The flyers and posters for this event were organised by Murray Frieberg who donated the food for the cheese and biscuit platters and the Italian Biscotti for the evening meal.  Murray was also very generous in donating the champagne (once again) for this wonderful Cottesloe Club function.

Many thanks to Dinah Terry, Jane Hope, Val Formby and even Glenn Lehman who helped in the kitchen to make up platters during the course of the afternoon.  A special thanks to Val for staying behind till 9pm to clean up the kitchen at the end of the festivities.

David Thomas opened the bar early for the thirsty spectators while Jane Hope collected money as diligently as a Club Treasurer.

Below is a list of some of the sponsors and helpers to whom we wish to express our sincere thanks:

  • Peter O’Dea who organised the steaks and buns
  • Murray Freiberg for the champagne, posters, cheese and biscuits plus afternoon biscotti
  • Peter Wakeford and Rick Cullen for the iPod prize
  • Tom and Vidette Wood of Club Sponsor Amberjacks for the lovely salads
  • Tony Alder of Alder Tapware: $200-
  • Gavin and Mary Sullivan: $100-
  • Cottesloe Tennis Club:  $100-
  • Rob Prouse, Glenn Smith and George Holmes - each buying a case of Corona for the event
  • Jack, Derek and Graham: for cooking up a storm of steaks
  • Judi Coffey: for organising the Childrens Raffle
  • David Thomas:   manning the bar !

and last but not least:

  • Dinah Terry, Val Formby, Jane Hope and Glen Lehman for all round helpfulness

My apologies if I have left anyone off the list and our sincere thanks once again,  Claire (on behalf of Club Captain Laurence Pace)
