Men’s State Grade Blockbuster Event – 30 Jan 2010

January 23rd, 2010 by Matthew

CTC Logo 2009 12 17

On 30 January current Men’s State Grade joint leaders Cottesloe Tennis Club play the winners of the last 4 State Grade seasons: Hensman Park.  Starting at 1pm at your Club.

It is hard to remember the last time Cottesloe beat Hensman Park, both teams are front runners for this year’s title.  A victory will go a long way towards securing Cottesloe top-spot from the regular season and home court advantage in the finals!

Our number 1 player Callum Beale has not lost a match in the last four years playing State Grade in WA and South Australia, lets help him keep that record against the best the State Grade competition has to offer!

This is a massive home game event for Cottesloe and we are looking to our members to come down in force to enjoy the atmosphere, watch some of the very best tennis to be seen in the State and to cheer on the Cottesloe Men’s State Grade team.

There will be free ice-cram and a drink for Junior spectators at 4pm and a chance to win a Junior Sports Pack from our major sponsors Sports Fever (grab your ticket by 2.30pm).

The bar opens at 2.30pm, afternoon tea for members and guests will be from 3.30pm-4pm and from 5.30pm Steak Burgers and a Sausage Sizzle will be in operation.

Make a note for Sat 30th January in your diary and get down the Club with family and friends for a great afternoon of Tennis !

Pennants news from Rose Moore

September 7th, 2009 by Matthew

Our Mid-week Pennants Co-ordinator has provided this update for your reading pleasure – thanks Rose !

Midweek Open Winter League

Division 3

A stunning season for this team:  Lisa McCusker, Clair Medhurst, Kirstin Prendiville, Rose Moore (Captain), Donna Holmes and Anna Cullen .  Through strong team work and deliberate game control the team produced a series wins week after week.    This placed them 2nd on the ladder by the end of the season but sadly lost their way in the semi’s.  Another year another outcome perhaps – but there was no question they enjoyed every week and look forward to the coming Summer season.

Division 5

Some great games and long rally’s was the name of the game for this team – Julie Holt (Capt.), Jo Dawkins, Sue Dibb, Andrea Descant, Pen Oldfield and Mara Limberopoulis.  They didn’t quite make the Semis but enjoyed the season no less.

Women’s Night League

Division 3

A brilliant season for this team –Lucinda Anderson (Captain), Sheena Storm, Fiona Allan, Jo Keaney, Lisa McCusker and Rose Moore the team ended  2nd on the ladder.  Wherever they played their wins were thorough.  Ringing Jo to play whenever Lisa was unavailable ensured a consistent strong 1st player.  The Semi’s was a convincing win and the trophy was in grasp!!.  Sadly it slipped through their fingers with a narrow loss in the finals.  Their opposition, Kinglsey, had a dynamite 4th player that trounced all of her opponents. Some wondered if she needed a partner at all!

Pennant Hints/Rules/ Etiquette

Partner support

‘If you can’t say something nice it’s best to say nothing at all’ – When your partner makes a mistake, she already knows and is beating herself about it so she doesn’t need you pointing it out.

‘The only words spoken to your partner shall be is positive’. Eg. Not “I’m positive you stuffed that up!!”

5th Player Rule – Midweek Open, Grass 45’s, Grass 55’s and also Night leagues are able to use a 5th player.  Remember they need to be listed on the sheet prior to commencement of play. So if you know a player who would like to play but find 6 sets too much then they may play just 2 or 4.

‘Ball on court’- If the Server has already serve the 1st ball and has not commenced serving the 2nd ball, when a ball enters the court , the Server not automatically given a “take 2” unless this ball caused her some form of interruption (either a long time or she had to move to get the ball off the court).

‘Commencement of play’ – 9.30am Midweek, 7.30pm Night.  Score cards are to be written out 10 minutes before commencement of play, balls warmed up before commencement of play and all players on the court (not premises)at commencement of play. 2 sets can be claimed as 6-0 .  This needs some form of enforcement to encourage the length of play to be kept within the shortest time frame.

‘Home games’ – just a reminder that all pennant teams need to supply their own milk for teas & coffees on home games. Also to take home & wash dirty table cloths.

Mid-week / Night Pennants report

May 4th, 2009 by Matthew

From Pennants Co-ordinator Rose Moore

Midweek/Night Pennants

The Midweek Pennant season this summer was a mix bag of a heat out and a wash out (most surprising for Summer).  A smooth running season with no major problems finding players.  Many thanks to Ruth Luyer, Julie Holt, Sheena Storm and myself for doing an excellent job as Captains.

Grass 55 Div 1 Team – as usual where an incredible force to be reckoned with.  They maintained  1st position for most of the season but a rain off day meant a draw on a match they needed.  A great season with finishing 3rd but missing out in the semis.  The team – Ruth Luyer as Captain,  Thelma Furlong, Dianne Hewitt, Jeanette Muir, Tricia Den Hann and Judy Curran. See them next summer season as a trophy is imminent.

Midweek Pennant Division 3 Team –A very good season with some really great wins.  Beating the undefeated top team was a bonus. Ending up 4th on the ladder for the semis meant an early morning and a long drive to Lesmurdie where we lost convincingly.  There’s always next season! This was really a mix of 2 teams of old with Rose Moore as Captain, Lisa McCusker, Kirsten Prendiville, Claire Medhurst (back from knee reconstruction), Donna Holmes and our Dutch dynamite Anna Cullen.

Midweek Pennant Division 4 Team – began a little daunted but proved to be in the race with some wins and very close games.  Most players in the team also increased their rankings – a job well done. The team continues unchanged to fight on throughout the winter season with Julie Holt as Captain, Jo Dawkins, Sue Dibb(welcome back to pennants), Andrea Descant, Pen Oldfield, Mara Limberopoulis and Lorraine Bossie.

Women’s Night Div 2 Team- psychologically, losing their No.1 player to ‘tennis elbow’ (Michelle Atkins), every week was like starting behind the eight ball. Fantastic tennis, lovely opposition and delicious suppers but there’s no doubt a different division, a different outcome.  The Team – Sheena Storm as Captain (twin 1), Fiona Allan (twin 1), Lucinda Anderson (welcome back to pennants after tennis elbow recovery), Lisa McCusker and Rose Moore. This winter we are starting strong and ready to have a real go.

 ‘Not just a Coach’

Anna Cullen is such a dedicated player she was unable to take her son to his first day of Pre-primary as it clashed with her pennant match at Cottesloe, so David Culley took Brian Cullen (ages 5) to his first day of Pre-primary so his Mum could finish a very important game of the season.  Thanks David for saving the day and Brian for being so understanding!!! P.S. Brian’s Teacher was confused when the real Mr Cullen turned up later in the week.

‘2nd Tin of Balls required’

A certain team (who shall remain anonymous) were faced with the dilemma of their opposition turning up late. They decided they must take 2 sets as penalty (especially as this had potential to affect the ladder).  The Opposition, when told of their penalty and lack of communication or apology, became very aggressive and told the Cottesloe team exactly their thoughts, at which the Cottesloe team cowered away and gave into them, just like that!!  Where’s that 2nd tin of ball when you need it?

FAQ – rules of pennants

A foot under the net whilst hitting any shot is considered “out”.

‘Commencement of play’ – 9.30am Midweek, 7.30pm Night.  Score cards are to be written out 10 minutes before commencement of play, balls warmed up before commencement of play and all players on the court (not premises)at commencement of play.
